Urinary Frequency

When is it too often?

Urinating six to seven times in 24 hours is considered normal. Up to ten times can also be normal, depending on what you drink and physical activity.

A sudden increase can come from a diuretic medicine (blood pressure treatment). The best tool for understanding remains a three-day voiding diary, noting drinks and the times of urination.

More Informations

Urinating very often: a symptom whose cause is sought.

Definition

Urinary frequency means urinating more than eight times a day, often small amounts. It is not a disease in itself but a sign of something else.

Causes

An overactive bladder, interstitial cystitis, undiagnosed diabetes, high caffeine intake, or a bladder whose capacity has decreased.

Diagnosis

  • Three-day voiding diary (volumes drunk and passed).
  • Blood glucose to rule out diabetes.
  • Cystoscopy if a bladder wall condition is suspected.

Treatments

Treatment targets the cause: diabetes control, adjusting drinks, bladder training, or treatment of interstitial cystitis. The doctor adapts according to the results.

Nateen advice

When toilet visits are very close together, a few drops can escape on the way. A thin bladder control pad, Hospeen Lady or Men guard, keeps things discreet all day.

Educational content written for families and caregivers. It does not replace a consultation: a doctor, a continence nurse or a physiotherapist makes the diagnosis and chooses the treatment.
